NACHR

The National Association of Community Health Representatives (NACHR) is an association representing 264 Community Health Representative (CHR) Programs with over 1,700 CHRs from all over the United States.

CHR HISTORY

The CHR program began in 1968. It was founded on the concept that Tribal health workers are especially well adapted to serve the Tribal community, as they are familiar with Native languages, customs and traditions.

THE CHR MISSION

To provide quality outreach health care services and health promotion/disease prevention services to American Indians and Alaska Natives within their communities through the use of well-trained CHRs.

THE NACHR MISSION

To represent the issues and concerns of the CHR to the Indian Health Service and to advocate for professional development of the individual CHR to elevate their skills and education in the provision of health services.

NACHR OBJECTIVES

  1. Promote American Indian/Alaska Native leadership in the health profession.
  2. Reinforce and actively support the goal of raising the health status of the American Indian and Alaska Native people to the highest possible level.
  3. Promote better understanding in the health field between American Indians and Alaska Native people and other Americans.
  4. Advocate for more effective local, state and federal resources in the field.
  5. Provide a focal point for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information through a nationally coordinated communication system.
  6. Provide a mechanism for input into national issues and concerns affecting CHRs and the American Indian/Alaska Native communities.
